Frequently Asked Questions

Licensing & Legal Requirements

Beachman E-Bikes meet all Ontario requirements for a motor assisted bicycle, and therefore you do not require a motorcycle license, insurance, or registration, just a helmet! In all other provinces, only the ‘64 LSM is available, which requires a basic driver’s license (or moped license) and insurance to ride.

Yes, to ride an LSM in Canada you are required to have a valid driver's license, and must have your bike registered and insured. In some provinces, you may also need a motorcycle endorsement on your license.

  • Ontario (ON): You must have a Class M licence (or M-class with “L” condition for LS M), register the vehicle, carry valid insurance, and obey M-class rules. Read more

  • British Columbia (BC): Limited-speed motorcycles (LSMs) must be registered, insured and the driver must hold a full-privilege driver’s licence (any class except learner) and wear a helmet. Read more

  • Alberta (AB): You must register and insure mopeds/low-powered two-wheelers and hold at minimum the applicable class of licence (check AB Transportation). Read more

  • Saskatchewan (SK): Vehicles like mopeds must be registered with Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) and the rider must hold the correct motorcycle class licence. Read more

  • Manitoba (MB): Moped/low-speed motorcycle use requires valid registration, insurance via MPI and a standard class 5 driver’s licence. Read more

  • Québec (QC): Operating a moped or scooter (including LSM-type) requires a valid driver’s licence, registration with the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and appropriate insurance. Read more

  • New Brunswick (NB): To ride a moped/LSM you must hold the correct driver’s licence class, register the vehicle and have proof of insurance under provincial rules. Read more

  • Prince Edward Island (PE): You must register and insure your motorized two-wheeler and hold the proper driver’s licence to ride legally on public roads. Read more

  • Newfoundland & Labrador (NL): You’re required to hold the correct licence class, register your vehicle and carry insurance through the provincial Motor Registration Division. Read more

  • Yukon (YT): Low-speed motorcycles must be registered, insured and ridden by someone holding a valid Yukon driver’s licence under the Territorial vehicle laws. Read more

  • Northwest Territories (NT): Riding a low-powered two-wheeler requires proper registration, insurance and a driver’s licence that covers such vehicles under NWT vehicle regulations. Read more

  • Nunavut (NU): Use of road-legal motorized two-wheelers demands registration, insurance and a licence in accordance with Nunavut’s Motor Vehicle Registration and Licence Plate Regulations. Read more

Yes. You must wear a DOT or ECE-approved helmet when riding your Beachman, no exceptions.

Bike lane laws vary widely across municipalities. In our home city of Toronto, Beachman e-bikes can be ridden in painted bike lanes, but not in protected lanes or park bike trails. However, for your home city please research the regulations closely. ‘64 and Aviator LSMs may never be ridden in bike lanes.

Battery Information

We currently sell 2.8kWh and 3.6kWh removable batteries.

Yes. Contact your local municipal recycling department on how to best recycle your battery.

Your Beachman battery and charger comes with a 12-month manufacturer's warranty.

You can get in touch with us at info@beachman.ca, with an order request for a new battery and you can purchase a charger on our website.

  1. Proper Initial Charge: Fully charge your Beachman battery before using it for the first time. This initial charge helps condition the battery for future cycles.
  2. Regular Use and Charging: Regularly use and charge your Beachman battery. Long periods of inactivity can negatively affect battery health. If you won't be using the battery for an extended period, store it with a charge level of around 40-50%.
  3. Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Keep your Beachman battery away from extreme heat and cold. High temperatures can degrade the battery more quickly, while cold temperatures can reduce its capacity. Store and charge the battery in a temperature-controlled environment whenever possible.
  4. Partial Discharges vs. Full Discharges: It's better for your Beachman battery's lifespan to avoid letting it discharge completely before recharging. Try to recharge the battery when it drops to 20-30% capacity instead of waiting until it's nearly or completely depleted. This also means that you're less likely to get caught part way through a ride without charge.
  5. Use the Correct Charger: Always use a Beachman charger on your battery. Using an incorrect charger can damage the battery and potentially pose safety risks.
  6. Charge on a Hard, Flat Surface: To prevent overheating, charge the battery on a hard, flat surface that allows for adequate ventilation. Avoid charging on carpets, beds, or sofas. You can also charge your battery in the bike using the onboard charge port.
  7. Proper Storage: If you need to store the battery for an extended period, keep it in a cool, dry place with a partial charge (about 40-50%). Recharge the battery to this level every 3-6 months during storage. Do not leave a Beachman battery dormant for more than 6 months without a charge, or you risk battery failure.

If you are concerned about your battery please get in touch with us and fill out this battery health questionnaire.

Beginner Information

If you're new to motorcycle riding, the Beachman '64 is an excellent beginner bike.

  • Lightweight Frame: The bike's lightweight yet durable frame makes it easier to handle, especially for those who are not used to the bulk and weight of traditional motorcycles. A lighter bike can help you maintain balance and maneuverability, crucial for building riding confidence.
  • Electric Motor: Being electric, the bike offers a simpler riding experience. There are no gears to shift, which can be one of the more intimidating aspects for new riders on traditional motorcycles. The electric motor provides smooth acceleration and reduces maintenance concerns associated with gas engines.
  • Size and Appearance: Despite its lightweight frame, the bike presents the look and feel of a larger motorcycle, giving you the presence and style on the road without the associated weight. This can be particularly appealing for new riders who want the motorcycle experience with less complexity.
  • Eco-Friendly and Quiet: Electric bikes are quieter than their gasoline counterparts and environmentally friendly. Riding an electric bike means you'll be reducing emissions and noise pollution - an undeniable win, win.
